Toothpastes recommended by dental health expert

before getting into the depths of understanding the best toothpastes for your dental health concerns, a key point to consider is that no toothpaste alone can fix your tooth pain, stabilize a shaky tooth or repair a decayed tooth. A toothpaste's role in your dental health primarily comes under preventive part and not the restorative part, which means it can only help you in preventing teeth decay, bad breath, sensitivity and plaque build-up by cleaning your teeth, but unfortunately, it cannot repair your already existing teeth decays. Now that being established, let us deep dive into the most suitable toothpastes for you according to your unique needs.

The recommendations will prioritize safety, proven efficacy and broad spectrum plaque control.

1. Stannous fluoride based (SnF2):

Toothpastes containing this ingredient have the following properties:

  • Anti-bacterial
  • Anti-gingivitis
  • Anti-sensitivity
  • Proven caries index reduction

Examples of toothpaste containing SnF2: Parodontax Complete Protection (SnF2 = 0.454%), Colgate Total Advanced Health (SnF2 version post 2019), Sensodyne Sensitivity and Gum, Crest Gum Detoxify/ Pro-health.

2. Zinc or Zinc Citrate based

  • Reduces plaque and bad breath
  • Mild anti-bacterial activity
  • Good option for gingivitis prone individuals

Examples: Colgate Ved Shakti/ Colgate Herbal with Zinc Citrate, Zendium BioScience Toothpaste (Zinc+Enzymes).

3. Nano Hydroxyapetite/ Arginine-based remineralizing toothpastes:

  • Helps rebuild enamel (upto a certain limit)
  • Excellent for caries prevention and sensitivity
  • Best for children, adolescents and high-risk caries patients

Examples: Theodent Classic (nHAp, fluoride-free), Vantej Toothpaste (nHAp - India based), Apagard Premio (Japan, nHAp), Colgate Sensitive Pro-relief (8% Arginine), Boka Ela Mint (nHAp).

3. Fluoride only toothpastes

  • Standard, safe, everyday use
  • Proven caries protection with minimal risk

Examples: Colgate Cavity Protection (1450ppm fluoride), Sensodyne Daily Protection, Pepsodent Germicheck (non triclosan version)

5. For children uner 6 years of age:

  • Use only age appropriate fluoride levels (500-1000ppm)
  • No triclosan, no whitening and no antimicrobial agents.

Examples: Colgate Kids 2-5 years, Mamaearth Kids toothpaste, Pigeon toothpaste.

It is crucial to know the ingredients to avoid:

  • Any product listing triclosan, TCS, or Irgasan
  • Old Colgate Total (Pre 2019 version)
  • Unbranded or expired tubes with unclear ingredients lists.

 Hope this helps. :)

Best regards

Dr Sakshi
